Offense
starts at 1:00
That 3rd Q gave us something to complain about. Ground game was effective despite LBs screaming into gaps at the snap. Worst UFR experience: Denard vs Indiana. Higdon and Evans are good backs. Offset draw came back. Zone too. Injuries...collar pull. Not the game to ding up Higdon and Gary.
Defense
starts at 24:30
Defense: Maryland got some edge things. Brand would be a player if he was 6'2. Uche moving Prince, stealing McCray's screen picksix. Hudson gets a Eurostep blocked punt. Are any complaints valid? Defense got a little gashed vs an offense like Ohio State. Everyone got put to sleep by this game, including Ace.
Ace’s Hockey Podcast and Brian’s Basketball Podcast
starts at 39:12
Four Minnesota-Michigan hockey games a year makes all of the griping over the Big Ten realignment worthwhile. Quality win bonus for this weekend is going to help them on the tournament bubble. Quinn Hughes is fun, thinks he’s hockey Denard. Marody we underrated.
Beginning wasn’t good—once Wagner woke up things went better. Livers can hold up but he’s not bumping Robinson out of there—might round into a defender later this year. Runner runner jumper.
Around the Big Ten with Jamie Mac
starts at 56:38
Jamie hadn’t heard the news so you get to hear him get the news: Cajun Hoke vs. Real Hoke is happening. Everybody gets a win over Illinois. Huskers give up a ton of yards to Demry “Who needs a mesh point?” Croft: Iowa couldn’t move the ball on Wisconsin after, you know. Michigan State are who they are: another 6-6 team that gets lucky but when it’s dry out they get shredded by Ohio State. Penn State was down 6-0 to Rutgers. The Justin Jacksoniest game ever.

1. Minnesota After UFR
starts at 1:00
You should probably block Khaleke Hudson. Minnesota’s approach to this game was bad. Not baffling—they were recycling ideas that worked once each for Penn State and Rutgers. Just…bad. It was bad. Offense things: JBB is obviously a good power blocker; when the offense was going to be a spread-to-Speight outfit in the offseason he probably was too bad at pass pro to be viable. Nice to see the running backs now picking up the subtleties of power running.
2. Hoops Preview LET’S GOOOOOOO
starts at 20:58
Who’s our point guard? Guessing Simmons will end up there, but it’s weird to go into a season without that spot settled—when was the last time that was true? Charles Matthews is the guy they trust to isolate and crate his own shot. MAAR’s usage up this year? Rebounding misses Derrick Walton; Moe Wagner knows he has to start grabbing boards to make the NBA. Teske is now Big Nasty (up from Big Sleep). Duncan Robinson is a coach out there. He might be the best shooter in the country; he might be the worst defender too.
3. Gimmicky Top Five: Thoughts About Board Games
starts at 44:50
We welcome special guest Reid McCarthy from Ann Arbor Elder Law to call Brian to task for calling out Settlers of Catan. This becomes a segment on all the board games we love and hate, and just put together once and thought it was cool but never actually played before losing a piece and now it’s worthless no YOUR childhood was ruined by MouseTrap. Also Brian realizes 5 minutes into talking about Wizards of the Coast buying out Dungeons and Dragons that he just went deeper into nerdiness than even this blog is comfortable with.
4. Maryland Preview w—once again relegated to—sg Seth Fisher
starts at 1:12:35
At least they have an excuse for their quarterback play. THE BORTENSCHLAGER experience might be over in favor of 5’11” Air Force kid. It’ll be like the Rutgers game but not the Minnesota game, basically. Come to me you precious easy passing yards. Come to meeeeeeeee.

They're supposed to have 65 defensive ends who are all 1st round draft picks.
Things discussed:
- Craig discovers a ref who’s been screwing Michigan for 114 years.
- What-ifs: Lew Alcindor, Antonio Bass
- Minnesota’s secondary was all kinds of out of position—not a good test.
- Is inside zone dead and buried? No, but this is a power team now because the guard play, and JBB is moving dudes.
- Once Michigan has a passing game, they’ll be able to really punish guys like Wisconsin’s 2nd corner, who got toasted by Simmie Cobbs.
- Khaleke Hudson’s big day; Winovich would like to know where his stats went.
- Is Michigan backing off Ohio? Michigan is recruiting Michigan and treating the rest of the U.S. as the rest of the U.S. No approach is all upside.
- What happened in Iowa City? Penn State and Michigan State have bad pass defenses that have been sheltered by the Big Ten.

1. Weatherfeels and Offense
starts at 1:00
Wetfeels: Brian’s 20-year streak of going to home games ends; Thanks Delany. Shout out to Black Engineer for tracking this: 20 commercial breaks, which is twice an appropriate limit. Did not play even 5 minutes of football between commercial breaks, couldn’t even get to 9 minutes of real time.
Offense: he Indiana split flow counter worked all night—we were actually getting annoyed with the Minnesota linebackers screwing that up. Manball approach took advantage of DBs who couldn’t run support. Running game is now consistently getting to ol’Stanford/Wisconsin levels. JBB is still an awful pass protector. Higdon’s long speed is impressive (>>>). Passing game look extant and functional early, later was just eating sacks, and unnecessary.
2. Defense
starts at 27:38
They completed three passes and gave up five sacks—you really have to work to find complaints here. They kept running the wildcat despite that not working at all. Khaleke Hudson finally got a chance to be hitman. Might have been robbed of the grounding sack; if that’s the case he passes Foote with 3 sacks and 7.5 TFLs in a single game. Some of that was attacking the not-mesh. Like a shark. Hurst was Hurstian.
Metellus ejected for nothing—least equal offsetting penalties ever.
3. Brian’s Wet Gophers: Hoops & Hockey
starts at 44:50
The guys read my joke Lantana read verbatim because they’re deranged. Do you know who else is deranged? Pat Tillman.
Hoops takes: Mathews (GVSU caveat) might be the real deal. Duncan Robinson is Duncan Robinson. Zavier Simpson started over Simmons; that probably won’t last. Expect Simmons to win that with Z regularly in. Working on transition a lot. Teske rebounds, knows his way around the court, has some passing skills.
Hockey: Michigan doubled up Ferris in shots, earned a win and OT loss. Lack of skill up front came back to bite them. Marody coming into his own at least. At-large conversation. It’s fun to go to Yost again.
4. Around the Big Ten with Jamie Mac
starts at 1:03:00
Chaos reigns in Iowa: JT Barrett made a statement in the Heisman race, which is that J.K. Dobbins was getting 8 ypc and they forgot to give him the ball. Josh Jackson is so good. Wadley finally got loose. Northwestern plays for OT with a 7-point lead because he always wins in OT. Maryland is down to an Air Force quarterback. Did Purdue put it on Lovie Smith? Indiana made it a game with Wisconsin. Penn State and Michigan State both discovered the other doesn’t have a secondary: 103 passing attempts in a rainy game.

starts at 1:00
The origins of the oldest and greatest rivalry trophy were way more normal than the legends, but there are some really good legends, like the time the Jug was stolen by some frat guys and they pretended to have found one.
2. Rutgers After UFR
starts at 21:45
Let’s talk about Peters: not just an O’Korn versus Purdue game. We nitpick because that’s what we do. The power running game and the tweaks to it were really encouraging.
3. Gimmicky Top Five: Other Things That Would Lose to Rutgers

starts at 1:06:14
Ben Mathis-Lilly of Slate is here so we stuck a mic on him while we preview Minnesota and not the things that BML talks about because who wants to talk about that? Brian and Ben apparently, because I have great takes from watching Iowa-Minnesota that I want to share and they’re all “Hey, 15-month-year-olds, what’s up with that?”

Then he's going to throw a touchdown and it's like ooh he's calm and collected again.
[Patrick Barron]
Things discussed:
- The Petersing! Exciting to see he was hitting his checkdowns, varying speeds. So calm and cool. O’Korn had a particularly bad game to get himself pulled. The margins here are small: don’t get carried away.
- Good idea to wait until Rutgers?
- How did O’Korn stay ahead of this guy? There are practice guys: Bolden memorized the offense but didn't learn how to play football. Could be that explains O'Korn's practice performance vs his on-field performance.
- The Peters Progression: Spring game was just the lunch menu. His sister went through the leadership crucible at Purdue in volleyball. He was so cool, laid back, Yzermanian even.
- Section 38 has three dancers. Scott Childers wants to get the whole section dancing.
- The ground game mauled people. Felt so good.
- Hey remember Rich Rod?
- Ohio State vs. Penn State: no, Don, we aren’t happy about it. Barrett looked like a Heisman player in that one—definitely not like he looked when they played Oklahoma.
- Is the run game sustainable? If the passing game can keep the safeties off yes, because they’re blocking well.
- Minnesota: the weather could screw Michigan by taking away the part of the game where we’re superior.

It's nice to be surprised that a quarterback did something poorly.
![]()
[Marc-Grégor Campredon]
1. Offense
starts at 1:00
The turning point was that outside Higdon run where a different guy handed off to him. Peters can go soft or rocket it in there depending on the situation. The bad: all explainable and freshmany. The good: ALL THE REST! May be some John O’Korn vs Purdue caveats. Running game: McKeon is becoming a big run masher. Big sets worked against a weak run defense. Everyone on the OL kicked someone’s ass. Everybody rooting for Kareem Walker. Drevno
2. Defense
starts at 29:28
Back to usual: rooting to keep them under 200 yards. Ban skill player wildcats. One drive was the Grant run, one drive was Rescigno going unstoppable throw god and almost getting sacked on the MSU thowback screen. Gary went off. Rutgers sacked on 20% of dropbacks. Aubrey got the start. Gary can jump high. Cornerbacks ignored again.
3. Special Teams & Feelingsball
starts at 43:38
Jim Delany ruins Big Ten football to enrich himself—fans left the stadium because the commercial breaks were coming at a 4 to 1 ad minutes per game minute ratio at that point. Suggest soccer-style ads and play football. Internet Raj does not consider 4th down spot karma against Rutgers a 1 for 1 trade.
4. Around the Big Ten with Jamie Mac
starts at 57:00
Let’s talk about the big game this week, after we talk about road dog Nebraska pulling it out against Purdue, and Minnesota-Iowa kindly waiting for the 3:30 games to end before having anything that we need to watch. Wisconsin beat Illinois by throwing to their left tackle. Penn State-Ohio State: I hate those guys. Prevent Fitzgerald invites doom, replay officials tried to help MSU too on the Felton Davis fade.

1. Penn State After UFR
starts at 1:00
Defense got got: Penn State mitigated the DL, confused the LBs, and ignored the cornerbacks. Trace McSorley had his unstoppable throw god game. Nitpicks from getting picked apart by the Nits: don’t play an RPO team with your safeties at 15 yards, or get McCray on a Barkley-like object. Offense was some improvement, still a long way to go. Line calls look screwy: is Kugler to blame?
2. A Refuse Repartee with John U. Bacon
starts at 24:17
The Great Halifax Explosion: A World War I Story of Treachery, Tragedy, and Extraordinary Heroism comes out soon and Bacon just Before we start, dear listener, I want you to imagine your over/under for how many minutes it takes us to:
a) say “Shut up, John”
b) mention Dave Brandon
c) call Bacon “Dave”
Also we talk about about WWI soldier, ladies’ man, ancestral pirate, amateur surgeon, hockey coach, machine gun officer, and hero.
3. Gimmicky Top Five: Other Things That Would Lose to Rutgers
starts at 52:48
Brian takes issue with people who reply in gifs, Seth takes issue with everyone who ever talks on the internet about anything, ever. Princeton has to deal with some awful red version of Sparty trying to steal their artillery. Hillary would lose to Rutgers.
4. Rutgers Preview
starts at 1:06:00
Ross Douglas in a Jake Ryan role is not going well. The defensive tackles are big and the noses are more than solid. Michigan should be able to flip the strength of the formation, blow out Turay, and run power to the house enough times to get Brandon Peters some snaps. Their offense is three running plays and can’t get the ball to Janarion Grant. We strongly suggest Michigan’s special teams also avoid doing so.

We, so tired of all the darkness in our lives, with no more angry words to say
[Eric Upchurch]
Things discussed:
- Penn State played a very good game; Michigan played an uncharacteristically bad one.
- Michigan was expecting the Barkley at QB thing; Gary just got too far upfield.
- Playing safeties at 15 yards is asking for run-pass-options in your face
- PSU hit their bombs; why can’t we chuck it to the 6’8” guy?
- Trace McSorley has been lucky previously; he was flat-out good in this one.
- Don’t put McCray on Dudes. Guys? Fine. Not dudes.
- Cornerbacks not tested after Long’s pick; played entire game in slots.
- Uncharacteristically Michigan lost one-on-one battles on the DL in this one
- Brian calls Craig Ed. Ed-Craig likens running quarterbacks to guerilla warfare. Ed-Craig listens to punk rock and opera. Joe Jackson narrowly edges out the 5th century BC’s Caíndelbáin al Óengusa of the Cholmain clan of the southern Ui Niall as the greatest musician in Ed-Craig’s 3,001 years on this planet.
- Devin Bush had a bad game.
- Brian is taller than Grant Perry.
- Can’t live without a passing game—safeties are 8 yards off the line of scrimmage.
- Peters won’t start but this is the game to get him on the field
- Jose says the defense has performed poorly in 10 of their 7 games.
- Personnel issues, not coaching issues.
- McCaffrey vs. Peters: Brandon has the golden arm, McCaffrey has to grow physically but has an edge as a runner and natural swagger.
- One-minute hoops takes.

Is John O’Korn an above-average Big Ten quarterback?

---------------------------------
1. Offense
starts at 15:00 (uh…yup, unless you want takes on dead bugs and McDonalds)
Improvement to less than mediocre. Sacks 50/50 between OL and O’Korn not getting rid of the ball. PSU took away the run by playing it tight, and passing O went how it is. Coaching this team has to be a special kind of hell for Pep Hamilton. We’ll see Peters eventually. Yelling “accountability” on the internet totally works guys. Big reason we want Michigan to win is to stop the stupid takes.
2. The Defense
starts at 28:00
Good news: Joe Moorhead is going to be a head coach elsewhere next year. McSorley played out of his mind. You’d think after watching Dalvin Cook vs. McCray they wouldn’t let that matchup happen with Barkley, but they did—Hudson blitzes were too aggressive. Barkley as the QB was a really good idea, good example of how to use a guy worth overreacting to.
3. Hockey
starts at 44:53
Michigan peppered Vermont on Friday for not much to show for it, then got some lucky goals on Saturday. Team looks like what we hoped they’d be: not very talented but defense is solid and they get after it. Lockwood is super-fast. Hughes trying to do too much but does cool stuff.
4. Around the Big Ten with Jamie Mac
starts at 58:41
Would Maryland take John O’Korn? Would Illinois? Would Rutgers? Minnesota? Northwestern? Would…omigod…most of the conference? Akrum Wadley has mad talent and can’t get out of the backfield. Illinois is all true freshmen and Jeff George Jr. Rutgers had 212 yards and 8 first downs…and won? Purdue couldn’t convert a 3rd or 4th down for their lives. Mike DeBord runs three straight inside zones and punts on 4th and 2. Also two QB draws then threw a fade to not Cobbs. Also a ref jobbing for MSU. LJ Scott had a 7-play suspension: one for each arrest. Wisconsin had just 9 drives, averaged 8 plays per drive.
