TORONTO-CLEVELAND: LeBron LeBron’d, the Raptors deflated, and Drake made a very ill-advised life choice.
BOSTON-PHILADELPHIA: This is not the Terry Rozier who played at Louisville. Boston a big step up in defense for Philly and it showed in Game 1. Sixers can still win this if they adjust and get more threes from Redick and Belinelli.
2. THE WEST

HOUSTON-UTAH: Game 1 was the first Utah loss of the year in which they shot 50%+ from the field because James Harden, Chris Paul, and Clint Capela went off. The Jazz fought back to steal a game on the road with Donovan Mitchell running the point and Joe Ingles making everything. Someone should really guard Joe Ingles.
GOLDEN STATE-NEW ORLEANS: Is basically over already. Anthony Davis is fun, though.
NICKNAME QUIZ: Ace mostly stumps Alex, accidentally gives away an answer.
3. POSTMORTEMS

OKLAHOMA CITY: Unless something very unexpected happens with Paul George, this looks like the end of any hope for OKC to win a title in the era of three MVPs in three draft classes. Melo is so, so washed, also lacks self-awareness.
INDIANA: Everybody comes back. Is Dipo a true franchise player? Ace thinks so, Alex is a little more skeptical. Big question going forward is what to do with young, raw center Myles Turner.
MILWAUKEE: Have they fired Joe Prunty yet? Anyway, this team is mostly locked into a mediocre roster and will go as far as Giannis can take them, though better coaching, especially on defense, could unlock greater potential.
WASHINGTON: Absolutely cap-boned. Poor man’s Grizzliesdom awaits.

1. EASTERN CONFERENCE
TORONTO-WASHINGTON (starts at 1:55): Wizards fought back on the strength of Wall and Beal, but Toronto has the 3-2 series edge and a much better supporting cast for their star backcourt.
CLEVELAND-INDIANA (at 11:41): LeBron and the Yobs, yet that’s good enough to probably make the second round because LeBron.
PHILLY-MIAMI (at 17:56): The Sixers let Dwyane Wade have what may have been his final big moment in Miami before easily dispatching them. Philly looks like the team to beat in the East.
BOSTON-MILWAUKEE (at 22:48): Going to seven games because [checks notes] Joe Prunty finally discovered that Thon Maker can play basketball quite well. Winner of this is going to have a very tough time with the Sixers.
2. WESTERN CONFERENCE
NICKNAMES (at 30:12): Ace tries to get revenge on Alex, fails to remember that Alex has deep Thunder knowledge.
HOUSTON-MINNESOTA (at 37:35): Houston went supernova and remains Ace’s pick to win it all. Minnesota’s defense got hamblasted.
OKLAHOMA CITY-UTAH (at 44:58): The Thunder needed an epic comeback to avoid elimination and we’re both skeptical they can avoid it for much longer. Russ is great, but Melo is washed, and Utah is the better-coached, more complete team.
NEW ORLEANS-PORTLAND/GOLDEN STATE-SAN ANTONIO (at 1:01:41): Both series are over, so this became a NOLA/GSW preview. Anthony Davis unleashed at center. Jrue Holiday is pretty darn good, too, but probably not as good as he was in this series. Next round should go GSW’s way unless Steph’s injury lingers longer than expected.
3. POSTMORTEMS

PORTLAND: Can they move CJ McCollum? If not, cap-strapped into being good but not great.
SAN ANTONIO: If they can’t patch things up with Kawhi, it could be an ugly end to an incredible run.
MINNESOTA: Promising young team but one of those youngsters already has an albatross contract.
MIAMI: Blow it all up in two years.

- Is Shea Patterson eligible to be eligible yet?
- Big Ten Basketball: bounce-back? Depends on who comes back. “If Fernando gets good advice he’ll be advised ‘you will not develop any more at Maryland.’”
- Jaren Jackson translates into Kwame Brown? Dad said go back to school to get more mature.
- Craig watched Iggy Brazdeikis film from two years ago. Comps: Scottie Pippen, Jalen Rose, James Harden, but less athletic, still really athletic. Those guys are A+ he’s an A. Right-handed but shoots left. Not a great off-the-dribble shooter but will knock it down on catch and shoot.
- Johns: Tim Hardaway-level perfect shot. Should be the new Duncan Robinson.
- DeJulius: Derrick Walton with his shot already developed, especially in his off-the-dribble stuff. Love to have a late shot great idea again, and a free thrower. PG is hardest job to do well in Beilein’s system, but shooting makes him useful before he gets there.
- Austin Davis can be Jordan Morgan plus a couple inches. Never give up on a big until they’re a junior and can’t play any defense at all.
- Spring things: Missed having a spring game to sanity-check the spring football bits. We believe in Dwumfour, but the JBB hype says the freshmen can’t pass protect yet; worry if he’s still starting in fall.
- Patterson scout: Tate Foricer’s problem wasn’t football. Lost faith in Peters? Irrelevant; what’s important is Patterson seems to be a better quarterback right now.
- End of season takedump: softball and baseball y’all! Natalya Rodriguez has such feet—got charged with an error that’s a hit with anyone else on the field. Baseball started 4-11 and now on a 20-game win streak! Damn the Big Ten: why can’t you have the softball/baseball schedules opposite during conference season so there’s a game every weekend.

3. Recruiting Football, Basketball, Hockey

Three sports, three football commits, a bazillion hockey commits, and lots of interest in the basketball program. Newburg is a wrastler. Herron is clearly waiting for Stanford admissions to decommit. Stewart committed from Connecticut, his school’s one to watch (2020 ND quarterback commit). Iggy finally jumped to the composite top 50. DeJulius and Castleton late jumps too. Could be better than the Fresh Five class. Girard? Balas thinks so. Hockey crootin.
4. Moritz and Matthews Draft Futures

This section became a 2018 hoops class segment. Expected Moe to go—unless his arms grew longer he wasn’t going to be a better NBA prospect. SEGMENT ONE: EASTERN CONFERENCE

TORONTO-WASHINGTON: Toronto looks like a complete team. Not just DeRozan and Beal—Ibaka, Valanciunas, OG Anunoby, Delon Wright all playing important roles. Wizards still don’t have any functional depth behind the Wall-Beal-Porter core.
CLEVELAND-INDIANA: Unexpectedly interesting series after Pacers took game one in Cleveland. Oladipo has been great. LeBron absolutely went off in game two. Cavs defense still sucks. Openly wondering how far Bron can drag this group.
PHILADELPHIA-MIAMI: Most fun series thus far—competitive and chippy. Philly blowout in game one, vintage D-Wade performance knots it up, then Embiid’s return helps 76ers take lead. Ben Simmons is ridiculously good. Series might not end up as close as it’s felt—Heat win came in awful 76ers shooting game and now Embiid is back.
BOSTON-MILWAUKEE. Boston’s weird guys are fitting together nicely while Milwaukee can’t get cohesiveness out of a better team on paper. As it turns out, Brad Stevens may be a better coach than [check notes] Joe Prunty. Eric Bledsoe should probably know the name of the guy who’s roasting him.
BONUS: Alex gives Ace a pop quiz on obscure player nicknames listed on basketball-reference. Ace does poorly.
SEGMENT TWO: WESTERN CONFERENCE

HOUSTON-MINNESOTA: Wolves lost any hope of making this interesting with Jimmy Butler’s awful final shot in game one. Wither KAT? Minnesota had awfully weird shot distribution in game two. Alex nails a pop quiz on Wolves who attempted more shots than Butler in game two. Meanwhile, Houston cruising even though CP3 and Harden haven’t had good games at the same time.
OKLAHOMA CITY-UTAH: Ace hates OKC’s offense and doesn’t get NBA TV. Alex defends the contested shot-making of PG13 and Russ, also gives Donovan Mitchell his due despite the pain of being a Pistons fan. Melo is waaaaashed.
NEW ORLEANS-PORTLAND: On the verge of an unexpected NOLA sweep. Anthony Davis and Jrue Holiday have greatly outplayed Dame Lillard and CJ McCollum. Nicola Mirotic is probably not fun to watch for Bulls fans.
GOLDEN STATE-SAN ANTONIO: On the verge of an expected blowout. GSW simply too much for a Spurs team without Kawhi Leonard. Athleticism gap is huge. Klay Thompson is not fair. RIP Erin Popovich.

The one time I want to talk about soccer and you’re peeing in my Cheerios.

- Liverpool vs Man U: Meh. It’s a friendly in a World Cup year so they won’t have their best players and won’t care.
- Shea’s eligibility: Usually the NCAA doesn’t get discovery from a court case but they have it now. If everything goes according to plan it’s Sam’s strong gut feeling that Patterson is a one and done.
- Sam’s mea culpa: Joe Milton is definitely in the conversation for QB1 in 2019.
- Football 2018 schedule might be toughest in the country: Crossovers are Wisconsin plus Northwestern and Nebraska on the road.
- Big Ten West preview: Purdue breakout but Wisconsin still wins the West. Problem with Badgers is Hornibrook throws well into tight windows, will have a pile of All-American linebackers like always.
- Big Ten East preview: McSorley is a luck guy too because he wins a lot of 50/50 throws but he’s also straight up good—how much does losing Joe Moorhead hurt? MSU: Inviting Reschke back after dude dropped an N-bomb because when you’re already the most despicable athletic department in the country what’s one more locker room distraction? LJ Scott stayed (?!?!?) because he fumbled a lot, but Madre London grad transferred. Maryland: Offense was Texas-beating good until they were playing 5’6” guys and The Bortenschlager.

- Next year C rotation is 60% Teske, 25% Davis, 15% Castleton.

- The Amazon Special: Craig Ross is a star, Pep Hamilton is photogenic, Jim is pretty chill, Don Brown is our dude.
- Best part of it is Chase Winovich: “You gonna protect your quarterback? Help me out bro run or pass? Why didn’t you block me?!?” Rashan’s mom: “Now go get some quarterback ass!”
- Ed’s favorite part is Harbaugh using changing the baby as a metaphor for not fumbling and the entire team is like “What is he talking about?” except Karan Higdon like “Yup, yup, yup, with the toys on the floor…”
- Hockey: Bad news is they were heavily reliant on their first line and that line all graduates/left early. Good news is they get Lockwood back, get one and maybe two Hughes brothers. People think Jack will stick it out with the NTDP but chance to play with your brother…
- Hoops outlook: Expecting Moe to go the NBA but it’s not as sure as it was before. Next year they can be a really good defensive team with Teske at the 5 but that makes you wonder where the shooting comes from other than Poole.
- The croots: Iggy is a shooter. Defense? Um. Passing? Not really. Buckets. Takes the Poole role. DeJulius the backup PG at least by end of last year, but only because Z is going to improve. Our slack chat is filled with drool over Castleton but might not get to use that until he’s had a thousand more trips through the buffet line.

1st Quarter: The East
starts at 1:00
Not great Cavs—LeBron’s having a good season but not his teammates (not even counting Kardashian-related things). He’s got to drag this team on his own now—next best player is Love. Lakers trade worked out for nobody. Raptors are a great regular season team with the best bench in the league, but Kyle Lowry vs playoff defense aint the same thing. Fred VanVleet most inexplicably good player in the NBA. Boston is 2nd seed but bleeding. Philadelphia: trust the process, don’t trust Embiid’s broken face, Ben Simmons is going to be great after the most SEC college career ever, the Fultz story is pretty crazy. Giannis Antetokounmpo is the most interesting players we’ve ever seen, Bucks defense has the Illinois problem. Heat are the island of misfit toys.
2nd Quarter: The West
starts at 39:43
Houston has built an excellent team. Fan favorite by default because Golden State is penciled in for the next 26 championships—they took the foot off the gas this year. Blaze are interesting but unless Lillard and McCollum go off they’re not deep enough to go deep. Drafting Kennard before Donavan Mitchell is gobbluthhugemistake.gif. Weirdly non Spur-like San Antonio team. Bryn Forbes has had a better NBA career than Denzel Valentine. Too bad what happened to Boogie even though it makes the Pelicans a more open team. Timberwolves are the West’s Sixers. Predictions.
3rd Quarter: Wolverines in the NBA
starts at 1:21:02
Jamal Crawford (Timberwolves) still in the league despite being Seth’s age. Epke Udoh (Jazz), Turkish Legend, is back in the NBA and playing significant minutes for a playoff team now that the NBA has caught up to his rim and out game. Tim Hardaway Jr. (Knicks) deal might actually be worth it except he’s having a THJ sophomore year from beyond the arc. The late shots these days are going to Trey Burke (also Knicks), who used his time in the G league to become a guy who puts up 42, a lot of that by exploiting the fact that the NBA doesn’t guard the midrange jumper anymore. Really efficient with Beasley now. GRIII (Pacers) was hurt most of this year, won NBA dunk competition last year, Indiana getting him up to speed for the playoffs. DJ Wilson(Bucks) played in the G League this year. Derrick Walton (Heat) signed a two-way contract, so spends time between Miami and Sioux Falls, [Seth has to Google this], SD, can carve out a role as a backup PG, good numbers in Sioux Falls. Expect Moe Wagner to be in this segment next year, and Poole sooner, and this year’s class will be all over the NBA eventually.
4th Quarter: The Pistons Segment
starts at 1:42:20
Most depressing franchise to follow right now. Trying to talk yourself into “if Reggie, Blake and Andre are all healthy at the same time,” gets you into a second round series before one gets hurt again. At best this core can get a Grizzlies 50-win era. Ticket prices are so ridiculous for a taxpayer-funded arena that it’s no surprise the new building is empty. SVG is a good coach, not a good GM. So…free agent fandom? Knicks have the players we want to root for but 1) the owner and 2) Knicks/Yankees fans. Caris Levert (Nets) is coming off the bench for 26 minutes a game and has a role as an either wing for a long NBA career. Stauskas bouncing around after the deep misfortune of being drafted by San Antonio when they still had Boogie (DeMarcus Cousins), then went to the Sixers, then Nets, but he was thrown in and they didn’t really want him.

And anybody who’s seen one hockey game in their entire life—except for one Michigan player apparently—knows that of all the sports the one that most demands the cup is hockey. Can you imagine what went through Mel’s mind when he heard this? Like he’s walking into a new program like ‘alright we’re going to really improve here, what is the current state of our roster?’
Things discussed:
- They ran into a buzzsaw. DiVincenzo reminds us of Clay Thompson.
- It should have been a game but wasn’t a game because Michigan couldn’t hit the broad side of the barn. Someone on that team was going to erupt—someone on ours had to.
- They needed a 40% shooting game to win this, 30% to be in this. That’s not too much to ask for—make their season average and that’s another 12 points.
- The defense was fine—they made Villanova shoot hard shots for all of their points; Nova just happened to make their shots.
- Will you see another Glen Rice? He was ahead of his time—the three was considered unmanly and stupid.
- Could you tell me in November that this hockey team could have been a two seed?
- ND has just one even strength goal against Michigan in four games.
- Quinn Hughes is blowing up into a Hobey-level guy, his brother might accelerate and play a year at Michigan before being the top overall pick in the draft.
- Mel calling out Brian for calling out Mel’s penalty kill.
- Notre Dame is a very disciplined team but nobody in this Frozen Four is good enough that hockey plinko isn’t in effect.
- Michigan dominated Ohio State in both recent matchups except in puck luck.
- How college hockey recruiting has changed: Snake oil was a real thing in college hockey for a long time. Coaches learned to steal each others’ guys but Mel’s not going to put up with gentleman’s agreements, living with the reality of the Canadian juniors. Have to be aggressive down the road because half your class will drift off to OHL/QMHL/JJJoJoCHL/NHL.

1. The Championship Game: Emotionally Drunk

Better to lose to a guy we respect than a criminal sex vampire. Brunson doesn’t bother us—like you can’t be mad about a guy Michigan wanted badly when Michigan gets is pure as the driven snow. Analysis is Donte DiVencenzo made off the dribble jacks four or five feet behind the line. Really could have used the Wagner Three Point Principle. Poor performances previously probably hurt Michigan in fatigue. Gameplan was fine: wide looks from three with their best shooters, 66% from two, lots of possible and-ones rimmed out. DiVencenzo heat checks prevented any getting back into the game, Nova ORebs were lucky and also Spellman, but that’s overstated: they didn’t convert them. Who could have predicted this Big Ten (/points at selves). Beilein as Tyrone Biggums of tape. Remember the bubble watch columns. Good feels.
2. Next Year: The Us

Position by position. PG: Indicators are if they want to get better shooting they have to cut into Z’s minutes. What’s a DeJulius who doesn’t have to start and can just come in to heat check? Eli Brooks is a guy Jay Wright wanted! POOLE! And Adrian Nunez? Anyway Skauskas/Levert breakout for Poole. Matthews expected back, think they can make him a shooter. Poole should take some pressure off him. Also Iggy should…be a McDonald’s All-American. The four, Livers?—feels a bit like early D.J. Wilson. Was 1/12 from three in last 14 games. Johns has a physical presence, Iggy gets buckets. Center: Moe has a decision to make. Unleash Teske: between great and game-changing rim defender. Redshirt Castleton if you can and use Davis.

Around the Big Ten: anyone good? Wisconsin? Isaiah Roby? Let’s go with Roby. Penn State is interesting even though they lost their best player. Michigan State will need to lean on their back court. Don’t trust Indiana or a Pitino team despite some intriguing guys. Northwestern fans suddenly care about recruiting. Ohio State will be dangerous but maybe not in 2019.

ND is a very interesting matchup given the previous games. Sticking with ND was the turning point in Michigan’s season, sweeping them was the destiny punch. Typical Jeff Jackson team that’s super disciplined, lacking in high end scoring, great goaltending (not Hobie-worthy). Have not scored a lot of even strength goals. ND has the best player—the guy in net—but Marody and Hughes are the best two players on the ice. A moment for Quinn Hughes: he’ll be on the ice a lot!
Ohio State or Duluth? M-D has more variance; Michigan hasn’t played a team like that with a lot of young, well-coached talent except Wisconsin, and Wisconsin is a worse matchup than even “we’re 0-5 versus” Ohio State: don’t count the first two games, the second two M outshot OSU 3-2 since. DON’T TAKE PENALTIES!
