Things discussed:

• Liverpool vs Man U: Meh. It’s a friendly in a World Cup year so they won’t have their best players and won’t care.
• Shea’s eligibility: Usually the NCAA doesn’t get discovery from a court case but they have it now. If everything goes according to plan it’s Sam’s strong gut feeling that Patterson is a one and done.
• Sam’s mea culpa: Joe Milton is definitely in the conversation for QB1 in 2019.
• Football 2018 schedule might be toughest in the country: Crossovers are Wisconsin plus Northwestern and Nebraska on the road.
• Big Ten West preview: Purdue breakout but Wisconsin still wins the West. Problem with Badgers is Hornibrook throws well into tight windows, will have a pile of All-American linebackers like always.
• Big Ten East preview: McSorley is a luck guy too because he wins a lot of 50/50 throws but he’s also straight up good—how much does losing Joe Moorhead hurt? MSU: Inviting Reschke back after dude dropped an N-bomb because when you’re already the most despicable athletic department in the country what’s one more locker room distraction? LJ Scott stayed (?!?!?) because he fumbled a lot, but Madre London grad transferred. Maryland: Offense was Texas-beating good until they were playing 5’6” guys and The Bortenschlager.
• Sam’s mea culpa on Castleton after THIS.
• Next year C rotation is 60% Teske, 25% Davis, 15% Castleton.
• X or Z? His dad calls him X. He’s your starter but don’t want him to get 35 minutes a game.
• Moe a mid-2nd rounder right now. Long term stretch bench guy.

Things discussed:

• The Amazon Special: Craig Ross is a star, Pep Hamilton is photogenic, Jim is pretty chill, Don Brown is our dude.
• Best part of it is Chase Winovich: “You gonna protect your quarterback? Help me out bro run or pass? Why didn’t you block me?!?” Rashan’s mom: “Now go get some quarterback ass!”
• Ed’s favorite part is Harbaugh using changing the baby as a metaphor for not fumbling and the entire team is like “What is he talking about?” except Karan Higdon like “Yup, yup, yup, with the toys on the floor…”
• Hockey: Bad news is they were heavily reliant on their first line and that line all graduates/left early. Good news is they get Lockwood back, get one and maybe two Hughes brothers. People think Jack will stick it out with the NTDP but chance to play with your brother…
• Hoops outlook: Expecting Moe to go the NBA but it’s not as sure as it was before. Next year they can be a really good defensive team with Teske at the 5 but that makes you wonder where the shooting comes from other than Poole.
• The croots: Iggy is a shooter. Defense? Um. Passing? Not really. Buckets. Takes the Poole role. DeJulius the backup PG at least by end of last year, but only because Z is going to improve. Our slack chat is filled with drool over Castleton but might not get to use that until he’s had a thousand more trips through the buffet line.

1st Quarter: The East

Not great Cavs—LeBron’s having a good season but not his teammates (not even counting Kardashian-related things). He’s got to drag this team on his own now—next best player is Love. Lakers trade worked out for nobody. Raptors are a great regular season team with the best bench in the league, but Kyle Lowry vs playoff defense aint the same thing. Fred VanVleet most inexplicably good player in the NBA. Boston is 2nd seed but bleeding. Philadelphia: trust the process, don’t trust Embiid’s broken face, Ben Simmons is going to be great after the most SEC college career ever, the Fultz story is pretty crazy. Giannis Antetokounmpo is the most interesting players we’ve ever seen, Bucks defense has the Illinois problem. Heat are the island of misfit toys.

2nd Quarter: The West

Houston has built an excellent team. Fan favorite by default because Golden State is penciled in for the next 26 championships—they took the foot off the gas this year. Blaze are interesting but unless Lillard and McCollum go off they’re not deep enough to go deep. Drafting Kennard before Donavan Mitchell is gobbluthhugemistake.gif. Weirdly non Spur-like San Antonio team. Bryn Forbes has had a better NBA career than Denzel Valentine. Too bad what happened to Boogie even though it makes the Pelicans a more open team. Timberwolves are the West’s Sixers. Predictions.

3rd Quarter: Wolverines in the NBA

Jamal Crawford (Timberwolves) still in the league despite being Seth’s age. Epke Udoh (Jazz), Turkish Legend, is back in the NBA and playing significant minutes for a playoff team now that the NBA has caught up to his rim and out game. Tim Hardaway Jr. (Knicks) deal might actually be worth it except he’s having a THJ sophomore year from beyond the arc. The late shots these days are going to Trey Burke (also Knicks), who used his time in the G league to become a guy who puts up 42, a lot of that by exploiting the fact that the NBA doesn’t guard the midrange jumper anymore. Really efficient with Beasley now. GRIII (Pacers) was hurt most of this year, won NBA dunk competition last year, Indiana getting him up to speed for the playoffs. DJ Wilson(Bucks) played in the G League this year. Derrick Walton (Heat) signed a two-way contract, so spends time between Miami and Sioux Falls, [Seth has to Google this], SD, can carve out a role as a backup PG, good numbers in Sioux Falls. Expect Moe Wagner to be in this segment next year, and Poole sooner, and this year’s class will be all over the NBA eventually.

4th Quarter: The Pistons Segment

Most depressing franchise to follow right now. Trying to talk yourself into “if Reggie, Blake and Andre are all healthy at the same time,” gets you into a second round series before one gets hurt again. At best this core can get a Grizzlies 50-win era. Ticket prices are so ridiculous for a taxpayer-funded arena that it’s no surprise the new building is empty. SVG is a good coach, not a good GM. So…free agent fandom? Knicks have the players we want to root for but 1) the owner and 2) Knicks/Yankees fans. Caris Levert (Nets) is coming off the bench for 26 minutes a game and has a role as an either wing for a long NBA career. Stauskas bouncing around after the deep misfortune of being drafted by San Antonio when they still had Boogie (DeMarcus Cousins), then went to the Sixers, then Nets, but he was thrown in and they didn’t really want him.

And anybody who’s seen one hockey game in their entire life—except for one Michigan player apparently—knows that of all the sports the one that most demands the cup is hockey. Can you imagine what went through Mel’s mind when he heard this? Like he’s walking into a new program like ‘alright we’re going to really improve here, what is the current state of our roster?’

Things discussed:

• They ran into a buzzsaw. DiVincenzo reminds us of Clay Thompson.
• It should have been a game but wasn’t a game because Michigan couldn’t hit the broad side of the barn. Someone on that team was going to erupt—someone on ours had to.
• They needed a 40% shooting game to win this, 30% to be in this. That’s not too much to ask for—make their season average and that’s another 12 points.
• The defense was fine—they made Villanova shoot hard shots for all of their points; Nova just happened to make their shots.
• Will you see another Glen Rice? He was ahead of his time—the three was considered unmanly and stupid.
• Could you tell me in November that this hockey team could have been a two seed?
• ND has just one even strength goal against Michigan in four games.
• Quinn Hughes is blowing up into a Hobey-level guy, his brother might accelerate and play a year at Michigan before being the top overall pick in the draft.
• Mel calling out Brian for calling out Mel’s penalty kill.
• Notre Dame is a very disciplined team but nobody in this Frozen Four is good enough that hockey plinko isn’t in effect.
• Michigan dominated Ohio State in both recent matchups except in puck luck.
• How college hockey recruiting has changed: Snake oil was a real thing in college hockey for a long time. Coaches learned to steal each others’ guys but Mel’s not going to put up with gentleman’s agreements, living with the reality of the Canadian juniors. Have to be aggressive down the road because half your class will drift off to OHL/QMHL/JJJoJoCHL/NHL.

It does feel nice to not have it be the criminal sex vampire.

1. The Championship Game: Emotionally Drunk

Better to lose to a guy we respect than a criminal sex vampire. Brunson doesn’t bother us—like you can’t be mad about a guy Michigan wanted badly when Michigan gets is pure as the driven snow. Analysis is Donte DiVencenzo made off the dribble jacks four or five feet behind the line. Really could have used the Wagner Three Point Principle. Poor performances previously probably hurt Michigan in fatigue. Gameplan was fine: wide looks from three with their best shooters, 66% from two, lots of possible and-ones rimmed out. DiVencenzo heat checks prevented any getting back into the game, Nova ORebs were lucky and also Spellman, but that’s overstated: they didn’t convert them. Who could have predicted this Big Ten (/points at selves). Beilein as Tyrone Biggums of tape. Remember the bubble watch columns. Good feels.

2. Next Year: The Us

Position by position. PG: Indicators are if they want to get better shooting they have to cut into Z’s minutes. What’s a DeJulius who doesn’t have to start and can just come in to heat check? Eli Brooks is a guy Jay Wright wanted! POOLE! And Adrian Nunez? Anyway Skauskas/Levert breakout for Poole. Matthews expected back, think they can make him a shooter. Poole should take some pressure off him. Also Iggy should…be a McDonald’s All-American. The four, Livers?—feels a bit like early D.J. Wilson. Was 1/12 from three in last 14 games. Johns has a physical presence, Iggy gets buckets. Center: Moe has a decision to make. Unleash Teske: between great and game-changing rim defender. Redshirt Castleton if you can and use Davis.

3. Next Year: The Them

Around the Big Ten: anyone good? Wisconsin? Isaiah Roby? Let’s go with Roby. Penn State is interesting even though they lost their best player. Michigan State will need to lean on their back court. Don’t trust Indiana or a Pitino team despite some intriguing guys. Northwestern fans suddenly care about recruiting. Ohio State will be dangerous but maybe not in 2019.

4. Ace’s Hockey Podcast wsg Anthony Ciatti

ND is a very interesting matchup given the previous games. Sticking with ND was the turning point in Michigan’s season, sweeping them was the destiny punch. Typical Jeff Jackson team that’s super disciplined, lacking in high end scoring, great goaltending (not Hobie-worthy). Have not scored a lot of even strength goals. ND has the best player—the guy in net—but Marody and Hughes are the best two players on the ice. A moment for Quinn Hughes: he’ll be on the ice a lot!

Ohio State or Duluth? M-D has more variance; Michigan hasn’t played a team like that with a lot of young, well-coached talent except Wisconsin, and Wisconsin is a worse matchup than even “we’re 0-5 versus” Ohio State: don’t count the first two games, the second two M outshot OSU 3-2 since. DON’T TAKE PENALTIES!

1. Cheer Up Sister Jean

A Pittsburgh left is a social custom to allow a left-turner to get out of everyone’s way. Really as soon as Duncan Robinson gets his sixth point it’s all good. Some weird lineups for the bulk of this game, though not crunch time—none of them were two bigs. Wagner’s amazing game was as defensive as offensive. Z…uh…came in late. C.J. Baird is the greatest player who ever lived!

2. Villanova Preview: They’re Really Good.

Why were they so wide open vs. Kansas? It’s like they thought Villanova was going to be five Tum-Tums. Watching different games to get a feel for Nova because we presume Michigan is going to defend them in a way that makes any kind of sense. Brunson may not be a huge NBA prospect but as a college player he is unguardable—a point guard who can post. Everyone shoots well from three. Their Bridges is better than MSU’s Bridges. Theory of geometric progression says Michigan due for another A&M game. Defensively they rank about where Loyola does—make your three pointers and you can make it a game.

3. Gimmicky Top Five: Great Postseason Performances

Top postseason performances by players that we remember—sorry Craig but guys named Gustav in nineteen dickety-two don’t rate. The GOAT in the Orange Bowl versus a bunch of murderous defensive linemen and a terrible secondary. The nuts game. The Shot. The little guy. The big man. The Champ (Ace was two so we kind of broke the rules). Stick around for honorable mentions!

Things discussed:

• Sam is on a plane to San Antonio and Ed is not here so we’ve got Ira, Brian, and Craig today.
• People should be nicer to Craig on our message boards.
• Texas A&M: Show me two guys on the floor who can’t shoot and I’ll show you a Beilein win. Their zone didn’t matter because Michigan was hitting their shots, even if they weren’t as good of looks.
• Nobody practices midrange twos anymore—back when Craig was playing routinely day everyone liked that shot—Moses was 80% from that spot.
• Will see Michigan State play some 2-3 next year we bet. JJJ is 80% to come back via people in Lansing.
• In the past when Michigan didn’t shoot well they just lost—being able to win these types of games is. Mindblowing stat: Michigan is 7-3 this year shooting under 1 PPP when historically they were 12-84.
• Impressive that FSU didn’t get any transition points until that missed goaltend/awful call on Moe.
• The story of Yacklich: guy wanted to stay a high school teacher!
• Only elite defending PG you can put with Z in Michigan’s history with Z is Gary Grant. Yacklich has some weirdly defensive guys for Michigan: Z, Matthews.
• The recruitment of Z and Winston: Z’s dad got frustrated with being State’s 2nd fiddle.
• Leonard Hamilton and that relaxing 10 seconds. Two or three open looks all game! Their 7’4 guy only played 7 minutes?
• Those coaches comments were pretty salty.
• Loyola-Chicago: MVC Purdue. No rise-up shooters so their threes have to be assisted, but they can get efficient midrange shots to go regularly. Been winning games close. Will stretch Michigan’s defense.
• If they get to the championship: Villanova terrifies us. Brunson postups might be Zavier Simpson kryptonite. Like a super Michigan. Much rather play Kansas: more of a Purdue with a true 7 footer who gets in foul trouble.
• Frozen Four: Mel playing with house money. Very due for one of these Ohio State games when Michigan’s been winning 5-on-5 by a big margin. Hockey is plinko is the crux of the argument against this tournament format—Michigan got some luck against BU.
• When Quinn Hughes is off the ice you’re asking when does Quinn Hughes go back on the ice? Nice that they’re no longer on top of basketball.

1. Boston University

Exceeded our best hopes by ten pairwise spots. Tighter than the 6-3 score, weird bounces, Michigan hung on with two really good goals. Weird to see Michigan less talented than an opponent, though it wasn’t by that much. Except for an amazing play by a guy literally already in the NHL this morning Mel was able to scheme these guys out of the middle. Weird BU coaching: left their best power play weapon off special teams.

2. Northeastern

If we had to pick one team not to play in the first round it would have been them or Duluth. Swallowed whistles of playoffs helped neutralize that power play but the real difference was using Hughes to control possession against that top line. Michigan outplayed them 5-on-5 so that PK time was a big deal. Very impressed with Primeau’s son versus Michigan’s onslaught.

3. How Did We Get Here?

Mel Pearson with the best first-year coaching job at Michigan since 1969. Started the season behind Michigan State, broke out after the break despite losing Will Lockwood. The more time Mel got with the defense the less leaky they became, helped that Lavigne locked down the starting spot in net—they can practice to emphasize his hugeness. Underrated moment for this year: the Pastujov line coming together to provide a solid third line—Michigan has its lower lines for 2-3 more years! Norris playing a defensive role despite being a 1st rounder is a huge value for this team. Slaker really came along too. Mel doesn’t ask guys to do things who don’t have those skills.

4. Frozen Four Preview

Notre Dame: every game has been the same, Michigan barely surviving but proving they’re similarly talented—ND is just many more years into their Mel transition. Jeff Jackson might be one of the best coaches in college hockey history and is still at his peak over a decade into his last job. Giving him two weeks to prepare for this is not great. ND not a behemoth this year—not more talented than M in terms of draft picks, etc. Great goalie, but stay out of the box and play five-on-five.

Minn-Duluth had to play through injuries and five players at the Juniors so they’re really good when they’re together. Duluth will have home ice. They’re like Notre Dame with more offensive talent, and older, and with NoDak’s fans. Excellent on special teams.

1. Ent Moot: The FSU Game

Emotional impact of 7’4” dude’s emphatic blocks was greater than their basketball impact. Michigan had a tough time getting into their offense; FSU kept them to just one or two actions. Nice to have Duncan to shoot some free throws at the end there because we almost died the way we thought we would. Is Reggie Miller fine? No, Reggie Miller is not fine.

2. Death from Above: The Texas A&M Game

People on Texas A&M bench putting their towels down and dying. Least hyped tip slam of all time. Z responded to T.J. Starks’s “unguardable” comment by setting a first-half turnover record. Every time it was about to stop being a solid, no-nervousness game, Charles Matthews took over. Both games he’s been way more effective stopping in the lane: got those breaks fixed. Thank you C.J. Baird!

3. Final Four Preview

Sorry, Sister Jean. Surprising Final Four team but closest thing to a mirror match Michigan can get unless/until Villanova, except Loyola’s got a Donnalish backup center. KSU wasn’t very good, so this isn’t the craziest 11-seed run. New challenge for this tournament: everyone on the floor can shoot. However there’s a big drop-off in defensive athleticism. Offense is kind of beautiful.

Nova: ridiculous. Z is big enough to switch on to centers but Z isn’t thicc like Jalen Brunson. If Nova tries to with this with Brunson post-ups, be our guest. Kansas has 40% shooters and a thunderdunker.

4. Ace’s Frozen Four Hockey Podcast wsg David Nasternak

Mel has us in the Frozen Four in his first year! Ace watches hockey and has hockey takes now. BU: Most talented team in the country and one of the worst-coached (down-year Kentucky of hockey). More of that Wisconsin stuff where there’s one too many attackers. Crapshoot hockey is fun when we get a Lidstrom bounce. Slaker got away with a PENalty. Northeastern: surprisingly dominant performance by top line vs the best line in the country. FYI we’re planning on a hockeycast sometime this week unless y’all have a major objection to that idea.

Things discussed:

• Michigan did not play well and won.
• What’s with the shooting? Was it the layoff? It did seem to just be one of those things: good looks. MAAR is 1/12 in the NCAA tournament, was an assassin in the B1G one.
• No other Beilein team wins that Houston game. Defense!
• Texas A&M: Matchup of contrasting styles. Another team with a four that doesn’t shoot.
• No Michigan isn’t going two bigs—they want to force A&M to take a big off the court to defend five out.
• Main takeaway for A&M-UNC: basketball is weird. Tar Heels got in a hole because of thruck, Craig: A&M was a physically superior team, UNC did the same to us.
• A&M’s best offense is to throw it into the post and try to bully Duncan Robinson, get some bad whistles called on Moe Wagner.
• Beilein does have a plan for zones even if Michigan tends to stare at them blankly. You can dribble into a zone if you’ve got a guy with quickness—you don’t have to just shoot over it (Tom!).
• From the A&M side: a very talented team that’s been not healthy. Our take: they’re still without their Marquette transfer point guard and didn’t exactly roar into the tournament.
• Tom Izzo is always a victim; Michigan State lost that game because of their coach.
• Craig thinks Michigan will lose to A&M, and if they don’t they’ll lose to Florida State or Gonzaga because those teams are really good.
