WTKA Roundtable 10/29/2020: Shostakovich’s Fifth Symphony

October 29, 2020

Things discussed:

  • Offense things: YUM YUM YUM! Joe Milton had the training wheels on but his ability to run was fantastic.
  • Craig thinks there are some coded messages in the offense, e.g. Hey Donovan Edwards, look at this!
  • How they used Ben Mason: you've got a great fist and you can use him to scare people: Seth thinks the MLB screwed up his fit on the 70-yard Charbonnet run because he was terrified of a Ben Mason gap appearing on the other side of the formation.
  • What happened to split zone? It's still in the arsenal; the great thing about this game is it had counters.
  • Is Minnesota's defense terrible? Michigan accentuated their flaws.
  • Defense things: Don Brown messes with what you want to do.
  • Hutchinson, Kwity, and Gemon Green hoy!
  • 3-3-5 Talk: get Jean-Mary to teach you!
  • Edge issues?

The Ace Pod 3.0: Funky Stuff

October 28, 2020

This episode, as always, is brought to you by the law offices of E. Jason Blankenship, who may be socially distanced from the courthouse but is still taking on clients. You can find his new website here.

SEGMENT ONE: RECURRING GUESTS! ALSO, FEELINGSBALL

Please join me in welcoming Connor Southard and Dan [REDACTED] aka “Thicc Stuaskas” as regular guests of the program. We lay out the podcast’s ethos: we’re going to enjoy this. Joe Milton emits extremely good vibes, as does the team in general.

SEGMENT TWO: LISTENER MAILBAG

Mel Tucker’s rivalry week bind. Any complaints about the offense? Bueller? How does the running backs room shake out? Yes, an incompletion was among the highlights of the night. More Milton hype. Not-so-rapidly firing several more questions, including our thoughts on Northwestern’s Big Ten West chances.

SEGMENT THREE: DAN’S RCMB SPECTACULARR

With bonus dramatic reading.

SEGMENT FOUR: BIG TEN WEEK TWO PICKS

For fans and degenerates alike.

Songs:

  • “I Found a New Way” — Twin Peaks
  • “Funky Stuff” — Jiro Inagaki and His Soul Media
  • “The Cool Change” — Rolling Blackouts Coastal Fever

MGoPodcast 12.6: Sickos!

October 26, 2020

1 hour and 55 minutes

We are, as always, presented by UGP & The Bo Store, and if it wasn’t for Rishi and Ryan I might have a very popular podcast on environmental engineering. Our associate sponsors are also key to all of this: HomeSure Lending, Ann Arbor Elder Law, the Residence Inn Ann Arbor Downtown, Michigan Law Grad, Human Element, The Phil Klein Insurance Group, FuegoBox, and Information Entropy.

Also we had to go with the audio from the Zoom call for Part 4.

1. Offense

starts at 1:00

Milton eh? Blake Corum, eh? Charbonnet's blocks, eh? Ben Mason ooooooooooo (stop at the whistle baby). Wide receivers fast, kinda wondering why Jake McCurry was more visible than Cornelius Johnson. All had concentration issues but Gentry speed. We didn't think to mention the line until the end which is a very good thing. Also a good thing: Gattis's playcalling and how it incorporated Harbaugh stuff.

[The rest of the writeup and the player after The Jump]

2. Defense

starts at 28:17

Before and After Dax (we think he'll be okay. Paige was not quite as okay in his absence. Kwity Paye, eh? Aiden Hutchinson, eh? Cam McGroon, eh? Dalton Hill, eh? Green looked fine—one push-off that was crafty work by the receiver and that was basically it. Gray still had to commit PI but he also stayed with Bateman most of the day. Edge issues popped up. OH HEY MICHAEL BARRET, EH?

3. Hot Takes, Special Teams, and Feelingsball

starts at 58:39

COVID section. Punt block was a missed stunt pickup by Josh Ross. The Barrett return was Charbonnet dodging the ball then throwing a monster block. The Haskins stick was impressive. Herbstreit tries to pronounce things.

4. Around the Big Ten wsg Jamie Mac

starts at 1:14:42

We welcome in Jamie Mac of Just Cover Blog, who's bouncing off his seat to talk about Indiana-Penn State, but can't because we want to give a good 15 minutes to Michigan State-Rutgers. Also the rest of the Big Ten happened, much of it on Maryland's face.

MUSIC:

  • “Golden Age"—TV On the Radio
  • “Duck Down”—The Roots
  • “Kings Left Behind”—Ikebe Shakedown
  • “Across 110th Street”
THE USUAL LINKS:

Last year Rutgers only scored 27 first-half points all of their Big Ten season, and they had 28 points yesterday.

The Sponsors

Thank you to Underground Printing for making this all possible. Rishi and Ryan have been our biggest supporters from the beginning. They're also behind our Ann Arbor Institutions t-shirt program, which this week's is Dominick's.

And let's not leave out our associate sponsors: HomeSure Lending, Ann Arbor Elder Law, the Residence Inn Ann Arbor Downtown, Michigan Law Grad, Human Element, The Phil Klein Insurance Group, and Information Entropy.

1.Preview Wrap

starts at 1:00

Things we learned about Michigan while doing the previews. Long discussion about the cornerbacks since they moved Sammy Faustin over. How do they treat Joe Milton at quarterback? Special teams: who should return punts?

2. Jug Myths wsg Greg Dooley of MVictors

starts at 31:03

Dooley joins us to talk about the real Jug story. No, they didn't break it and replace it. No, Minnesota wasn't trying to poison our water. No, Yost didn't care about his 30 cent jug or want it back until they decided to make it a rivalry trophy in 1909. Yes, Greg told Chase Winovich not to hold the jug like that.

3. Minnesota Offense

starts at 56:40

Their offensive line all returned BUT there may be some big COVID misses with the right side of their line, which went five deep and needs to draw in a sixth. The right guard is shifting out to tackle, the center is moving into guard, and they're drawing in a center who was decent in a little bit of time last year but the other guard might be iffy. If Michigan's DL can match up with that you shut down the system. You're probably not shutting down Rashod Bateman.

4. Minnesota Defense

starts at 1:12:00

An impressive nose tackle but not much back in the pass rush category except a bona fide freak who is not going to be a Carter Coughlin one for one. They're worried about their nickel back position. Yes, the corners are fine. The safety replacing Antoine Winfield Jr. is okay but a big drop because Winfield was great. Predictions.

MUSIC:

I'm excited to finally get a chance to share The Missing Chums, after interacting for years with their drummer (a huge MGoBlog fan) on Twitter. Everything's off their album Yes, You May. I had to ask really nice!

  • "Yes, You May"
  • "On the Dole"
  • "So So, Very Very"
  • “Across 110th Street”

If you or a friend made some good tunes and don't have a label out scrubbing for them we'd be happy to feature you.

WTKA Roundtable 10/22/2020: One Way to Spin It

WTKA Roundtable 10/22/2020: One Way to Spin It

October 22, 2020

Things discussed:

  • Minnesota? Their 11-win season was a bit of a mirage. Their offensive coordinator is still PJ Fleck, right? Breakdown on Minnesota's offense: Ricky Rahne situation? Michael Barrett's debut against RPOs is iffy, DTs living against doubles iffy. Minnesota's front seven and safeties iffy and pass protection also iffy.
  • Never punt?
  • How Big XII are Big Ten offenses going to be?
  • How many Oklahoma State guys can we name?
  • Our big questions. Sam's is the secondary, cornerback specifically. Brian wants to know offensive distribution. Seth wonders what their offensive identity is going to be after a year when they started an option read team and ended up a pin & pull team. Craig takes the interior defensive line.
  • By the way CR, the Chris Perry screen game was pretty good but your point is well taken.

MGoPodcast 12.5: Loves Football, Likes Meat

October 20, 2020

This episode was recorded before a live Zoom audience from the UM Alumni Club of D.C. A portion of what the people who came paid will go to the scholarship fund.

Also my audio turned off in the middle of it, which got screwy.

1. Football Bits

starts at 1:00

Vastardis: "Very smart, loves meat, likes football – a lot!" –Jim Harbaugh. Nico Collins is not on the roster. Charles Thomas transfers, again with nowhere to go. How much of Minnesota has COVID? Michigan's been lucky/good to only have two contained outbreaks over the summer. Filiaga wins the guard job.

[The rest of the writeup and the player after The Jump]

2. Gimmicky Top Five

starts at 14:54

We invite John Coleman from the UM Alumni Club of D.C. to name our five breakout players. Seth comes up with terrible (amazing) nicknames for his answers.

3. Hot Takes & Q&A Session, Part I

starts at 45:16

How hopeful are we for the season? How many Big Ten games will be canceled for COVID? Who's this year's Cam McGrone? How's the morale? Who does Michigan play in the Showcase? Chris Evans this time? How's hockey Ace?

4. Q&A Session, Part II

starts at 1:07:41

Warde Manuel: how's he doing? How does NIL change recruiting? How does the 2021 class finish? Who's covering Rashod Bateman? Why did Dylan leave? Impact freshmen? How's Jim's intensity?

You have reached Part III of our preseason spectacular. The show is presented by UGP & The Bo Store, and if it wasn’t for Rishi and Ryan I would be a trade magazine editor with uncool t-shirts.

1. The COVID Schedule

starts at 1:00

How many games are in your cereal box?

[The rest of the writeup and the player after The Jump]

2. The Big Ten West

starts at 14:54

Wisconsin or Minnesota, but let's talk a long time about Iowa for some reason.

3. The Big Ten East

starts at 45:16

We run out of time before Ohio State.

4. Hot Takes & Incredibly Specific Predictions

starts at 1:13:58

Seth does a bit.

WTKA Roundtable 10/15/2020: Battle of the Brands

October 15, 2020

Things discussed:

  • Rayshaun Benny and MSU’s interesting approach to his recruitment
  • Michigan vs Michigan State in NLI recruiting: just look at the Nike deals. MSU’s is $34 million over 10 years; Michigan’s is $160+ million over 11 years.
  • Joe Milton: what do we believe, what will it look like, speculation on McCaffrey is useless because nothing makes sense.
  • Nico Collins: any hope?
  • Dax wants to hit; he can play cornerback but doesn’t want to.
  • Don’t be that surprised if they pull him out at CB when needed.
  • Faustin is coming through, Gemon Green has enough talent to do so but hasn’t put it together.

We'll have to use some authoritarian leader from Germany's past

We are back because we are supported by awesome sponsors. The show is presented by UGP & The Bo Store, and if it wasn’t for Rishi and Ryan I would be a trade magazine editor with uncool t-shirts.

1. Defensive Line

starts at 1:00

The tackles are deeper and the ends are amazing, with all kinds of interesting new depth. Kwity Paye is the #1 freak of the year, and Aiden Hutchinson is the guy we think might be a 1st or 2nd rounder next year. So why are we so afraid? Oh right, because last year they were playing Carlo Kemp at nose and Jess Speight when they didn't have Kemp.

[The rest of the writeup and the player after The Jump]

2. Linebackers

starts at 26:12

A wildman and the safe man. Josh Ross looked good at WLB before looking not as good (against Wisconsin) at MLB then spending the year redshirting. Cam McGrone done busted out and is Bush if Bush wasn't born a savant. We expect Michael Barrett to take over the Viper spot, and be the backup WLB, but things get interesting when you imagine how Solomon figures into that.

3. Secondary

starts at 44:17

Oh dear. We recorded this before Faustin and Dax flipped who's getting tried at cornerback but the fear still applies. Not that we need to fear all of it, if Seth would stop reminding us that Ohio State gets to feast on them again this year. Clone Dax Hill.

4. Hot Takes & Special Teams

starts at 1:08:15

SLAP is our new punting stat and Michigan's punters are good at it. Percent returned is bad but we know why. Who's the punt returner? We want anyone but Ronnie Bell.

  • “Whatcha See is Whatcha Get”—The Dramatics
  • “Motion Sickness”—Phoebe Bridgers

Our associate sponsors are also key to all of this: HomeSure Lending, Ann Arbor Elder Law, the Residence Inn Ann Arbor Downtown, Michigan Law Grad, Human Element, The Phil Klein Insurance Group, FuegoBox, and Information Entropy.

1. Quarterback

starts at 1:00

Joe Milton is a Pahokee dude, Dylan McCaffery is going to graduate and transfer, which leaves us pretty light, no offense to the Cade McNamara hype we don't believe. Functional athleticism. QBs at Michigan after three years.

[The rest of the writeup and the player after The Jump]

2. Hot Takes and Hot Backs

starts at 21:35

Some of us believe in Charbonnet more than others, but the low thinks he's the best back since Hart, and the deepest stable of backs since, wow, the 1990s? Also Seth starts on about BEN MASON.

3. Tight Ends and Wide Receivers

starts at 54:52

There are a lot of fast little guys again, except Corn John. Erick All counts as a receiver. Eubanks could go downfield more, the slots can play outside, the fullback can line up at H-Back.

4. Offensive Line

starts at 1:30:57

A lot of things can go wrong and it will still be pretty good. Not worried about Vastardis, Hayes and Mayfield are the best tackles in a minute.
